LUDHIANA – Torrential rainfall, which lashed Ludhiana for over three hours on Monday morning, has added to the woes of flood-hit Punjab, causing widespread urban flooding and a fresh wave of panic among residents.

The downpour, which began around 5:30 am, resulted in knee-deep waterlogging in various low-lying areas, including Basti Jodhewal, Tajpur Road, Samrala Chowk, and Rani Jhansi Road. Although schools across the state were already closed due to the floods, college students struggled to reach their campuses amid the deluge and disrupted traffic.

The situation has created a sense of fear, particularly in villages along the Sutlej River, where water levels are critically high. “Water is just a few metres away from entering the fields, and villagers are panicked,” said Sonu, the sarpanch of Boothgarh village. He added that the administration had sent teams late on Sunday night to assess the situation and implement measures to protect vulnerable areas.

In a statement, Ludhiana Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Jain maintained that the situation in the district was under control and urged the public to not panic. Meanwhile, social media has become a hub for relief efforts, with local volunteers organizing and distributing rations, mosquito nets, and first-aid kits to flood-affected communities. The relentless rain has also caused several trees to be uprooted across the city, further disrupting normal life.
