PATIALA – The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the death of Aqil Akhtar, son of former Punjab DGP Mohammad Mustafa and former Cabinet Minister Razia Sultana, visited a de-addiction centre in Patiala today. The purpose of the visit was to collect and verify the complete medical history and treatment records of the deceased regarding his substance dependency and mental health issues.

SIT members have specifically requested Aqil’s admission records, doctors’ notes, prescribed medication, and progress reports to assess the long-term status of his condition.

Father Speaks Out

After days of maintaining silence, Mohammad Mustafa gave an interview to a TV channel, addressing the allegations leveled against his family. Mustafa stated he would fight back against the “false allegations” and confirmed his son’s long struggle: “My son had been battling drug addiction since 2007. It has been 18 years of struggle.”

He revealed that in 2024, Aqil’s condition worsened after he came across ‘Ice’ (methamphetamine), which triggered schizophrenia and psychotic behavior. Mustafa added that on the night of Aqil’s death, he and his wife were discussing taking him to Sunam’s Akal De-Addiction and Rehabilitation Centre for proper treatment.

Mustafa also clarified that he “voluntarily permitted a post-mortem examination” to ensure transparency and expressed confidence that the facts, being handled by the Haryana Police, would silence any political rivals.

Investigation Focus

Regarding the evidence, Mustafa clarified that a viral video cited by the complainant, Shamshudeen Chaudhary, was recorded by Aqil on his social media on August 27 when the family was not in Panchkula, adding that Aqil later admitted he was not in a sound mental state at the time of recording.

The investigation is ongoing, with the SIT serving notice to seal Aqil’s room in Panchkula for forensic inspection. The police are also awaiting the viscera report to confirm the official cause of death and plan to search for an alleged diary claimed by the complainant to contain a “dying declaration.”
